The counsellors are fully qualified and experienced in working with a wide variety of difficulties. The counsellors are British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) registered practitioners and abide by their ethical frameworks for practice.
Further information and details of codes of ethical frameworks can be found on the BACP (www.bacp.co.uk/ethical_framework/) or UKCP (www.psychotherapy.org.uk/ ) websites.

Individual Counselling How can it help?
Counselling gives you time and space to explore issues that are of concern to you. These might include:
- Relationship or family problems
- Bereavement
- Anxiety or depression
- Self-destructive behaviour e.g. self-harming, drinking too much
- Fear of failure
- Academic problems e.g. procrastination
Counsellors will not tell you what to do but will listen and help you look at your support and your choices.
The decision to come for counselling takes courage as it involves facing up to your difficulties and asking someone else for help. It is not a sign of weakness but a sign that you are taking steps to address any problems you are experiencing.
We offer contracts of up to six sessions per person. These sessions last forty five minutes.
Extenuating Circumstance
We do not provide an email supporting a claim of extenuating circumstances unless you have had a therapeutic consultation or a counselling contract.
When appropriate, the student counselling service can provide a standard email/letter to support a plea of extenuating circumstances. To be eligible for this, the student must either be, or have been, a client of the service. The form needs to be submitted 7 working days before the deadline. For more information on this please refer to the Universities Academic Regulations at https://portal.leeds-art.ac.uk/regulations.
- We do not provide psychological or medical assessments
- We cannot provide an email for students that have not had any previous therapeutic contact with the student counselling service.
No information is given about a student without their consent. If you have any questions about the counselling service's policy on providing evidence on extenuating circumstances, please feel free to call Student Advice and Wellbeing and ask to speak to one of the counsellors.
If you feel at risk, please contact your GP
