What to do in an emergency
Initial response to any emergency
- Keep calm
- Warn anyone in immediate danger
- Evacuate or move to a safe place if in danger, when directed or in response to an emergency alarm
- Notify the Emergency Services
Do not enter a building while an alarm is sounding, or re-enter an evacuated building until the 'all clear' has been announced by the attending Emergency Services.

General Emergencies
Gas leak
- Open doors and windows to let the gas dissipate.
- Don't operate any electrical switches (lights, plug sockets etc).
- Do not smoke.
- Turn off the gas supply at the meter if possible.
- Call National Grid on 0800 111 999 (freephone) for further advice.
Electrical supply failure
- Turn off any appliances that you do not want to turn on unexpectedly if the power supply is suddenly restored.
- Contact YEDL on 0800 375 675 (freephone).
- Be ready to provide the following details: when did the power fail? Do your neighbours appear to have power? (at night, are their lights on?
Water supply failure
- Turn off any taps or appliances (e.g. washing machines) that may spurt water if the supply is suddenly restored.
- Contact Yorkshire Water on 0845 124 2424 (local rate call).
Medical Emergencies
General Medical Emergencies
If a person is seriously injured or ill, call for an ambulance immediately on 999. Be ready to provide the following information:
Your name, location, details of the medical emergency, number of people involved

It is important that you report what happened to you to the Police as soon as possible. You need not do this alone; feel free to take a trusted friend or confidant with you. This can be reported via the emergency telephone number, 999, or you can visit a police station.
